Using Captions

Requirements
You must have Windows media player 6.4 or greater in order to view captioning.  If you do not have Windows Media Player, you may download it from the Windows Media site.

Preparing this video for the Web

How to view captioning with Windows Media Player
In order to view captioning, a Windows media file needs to include a SAMI (Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange) file.  Video clips on the HiSoftware site include these files by default.

Next, you need to configure Windows Media Player to show the captioning.

For Windows Media Player 7.0/7.1/8.0:

  1. Click on the Show Equalizer Settings button.  See item 1 in picture below.
  2. Cycle through the equalizer settings until the captioning text appears.  See item 2 in picture below.
  3. Captioning will appear in the block below the video.   See item 3 in picture below.

If the Cynthia Says Edition of AccVerify reports errors in your page, you can make the corrections directly within AccVerify and then save the page with the corrections.

In order to do this, you must have selected the files either locally, over a network drive, or from an FTP site.

Test the file or files and view the report.

For our example here, we can see in the report that the page failed for a couple of images at line 29 and line 30. These images do not have either the alt text or long description attribute.

After clicking on the link to the page, we can see that these images are pictures of the HiSoftware logo.

Because we have selected only one file, the source code for that file is automatically populated in the File Source view.

If you have selected more than one file selected, go to the Selected Files view, select the file you want to work with in the list, then click on the Load File button.

The source code for the selected file will appear in the file source view.

If in AccVerify, we go to the File Source view and find lines 29 and 30, we can add the alt text to the code.

The current line and column number appear below the code view in the status fields.

The Go To button allows you to select a line and column to go to directly.

In both lines 29 and line 30, we add alt="HiSoftware Logo" into the image tag.

We click the Save button and retest that page.

Other errors in your page for different checkpoints can be fixed in a similar manner. Please see the program help for assistance with understanding the different checkpoints.
